SOC316 Description

This course will examine youth from a sociological perspective. This means that the notion of youth will be placed in interaction with a specific historical moment and a specific social structure. The course will also focus on specific processes of construction of youth as in its relations with the construction of gender, identities, cultures and the participation on social movements and civic engagement.

This course is divided into three sections. The first will be a general presentation and analysis of the notion of youth and how plays with social structures and different components of society. Its aim it is to introduce the students in the sociological standpoint of analyzing youth. The second section will be centered in the analysis of youth from a global and international perspective through the reading of documents of United Nations regarding youth.. Finally, the third section will be devoted to in-depth analysis of specific interactions of youth with social components.
